Are Carpenter Jeans in Style?
If you listen to the so-called fashion experts, you’ve probably heard a lot of discouraging
things about carpenter jeans. The fashion police tend to say that carpenter jeans look great on dads and, well,
carpenters but that the jeans aren’t exactly the hippest choice for young people who care about fashion. But
carpenter jeans prove the point that, if given enough time, every type of clothing item eventually finds its way
into the good graces of the fashion world. Carpenter jeans have finally crossed that threshold, and we can
expect them to be there for a long time.
Why are carpenter jeans gaining in popularity?
What exactly happened to make carpenter jeans suddenly so cool? This is anyone’s guess, but my
personal belief is that the recent troublesome economic climate has made a dent in the notion of “high style.”
The uber-stylish look is now associated with too-wealthy and corporations with questionable ethics. As a result,
humble, working-class styles are in more than ever before, and carpenter jeans definitely fit into this
category.
Still, there are a lot of fashion-forward people who resist the whole working-class look. This
is fine, of course. No one’s forcing you to wear carpenter jeans. But at the very least, the rise of the
working-class looking gives us another fashionable choice when it comes to what we wear, and this contributes to
our diversity. That’s always a good thing, even in the sometimes snooty and elitist world of fashion.
And let’s not forget that carpenter jeans were quite popular in the late-90s and early-2000s
hip-hop scene. As we all know, hip-hop culture has been on the cutting edge of fashion for the last few decades;
when something is cool in hip-hop, you can expect it to catch on elsewhere within a few years. This is what has
happened with carpenter jeans. Of course, if you look closely, you’ll notice that most of the hip-hop community
has moved on from carpenter. But that’s the way it goes.
Features of carpenter
jeans
In case you’re not familiar with carpenter jeans, they are pretty much what they sound like:
They’re designed to be comfortable and utilitarian. They were originally created for working men, such as
carpenters, who needed extra pockets, features such as hammer loops, and enough looseness to make the pants easy
to work in. Plus, carpenter jeans are typically made to be durable, with strong stitching and extra rivets to
help extend the lifespan of the jeans.
In other words, carpenter jeans were designed with function rather than fashion in mind. Thus,
they’re made with soft denim that ages well, and there is a special emphasis on the quality of the
materials.
Generally, carpenter jeans have only been made for men, but many companies have begun making
female versions. The female carpenter jeans are pretty much the same—with wide belt loops, durable design, and
sufficient looseness—but they’re still hard to find. So if you’re female and you’re looking for some tough jeans
to work in, it still may be your best bet to invest in some men’s jeans.
